Pre-Conference Excursions will be held on Thursday, March 27th, 2014 from 9:00am-3:00pm. Registered attendees may only register for (1) Excursion. (Limited Space Is Available) Cost will be $100 for each excursion which will include: transportation, snacks, lunch, drink.
NIMBUS FISH HATCHERY
FOLSOM LAKE OUTDOOR ADVENTURE
Tour the Nimbus Fish Hatchery to learn about the annual Chinook and Steelhead Trout migration up the American River from the Pacific Ocean. The hatchery has fish ladders that allow the spawning of the fish. You will also have the opportunity to learn about Historic Folsom Wildlife area through a guided tour. Choose one of the following:
1)Relaxing Kayak paddle on Lake Natoma
2)Nature photography hike (please bring your camera)
3) 11.7 mile Bike ride tour around Lake Natoma.All experience levels are welcome. Instruction, equipment, Lunch and snacks are included. Limited Space is available. Early sign-up is recommended.
NAPA GREEN SCHOOLS AND WINERY TOUR
Named in Huffington Post as “America's Greenest High School,” American Canyon High School was one of the first CHPS Verified schools in the country, and features innovative 21st Century learning environments, a one-megawatt photovoltaic system, ground-loop geothermal system, abundant daylighting, and sustainable materials use. We’ll visit ACHS, as well as another neighboring Napa green school. Then we’ll spend the rest of the day tasting wine in the country’s premier wine-making region.
CONSUMNES RIVER PRESERVE WITH BIRDING,
OLD SUGAR MILL WINERY, HUSICKS COUNTRY STORE
The Consumnes River Preserve has over 11 miles of pristine trails for you to hike and is home to more than 250 bird species, more than 40 fish species and some 250 plant species with many wildlife sightings. Your lunch will be at the Visitor Center which houses interpretive displays that describe the natural and cultural history of the region as well as restoration and management to preserve land. We will then stop at the Old Sugar Mill and Bogle Wineries and conclude our visit at the Husicks Country store that was built in 1800’s; where farm fresh food is available to purchase.Lunch, snacks are included. Limited space is available. Early sign-up is recommended.
Partnership Excursion for
Green, Healthy, Sustainable Students
Your day will include a visit to Grant Environmental Science and Design Academy, where students have designed a green promenade. The Ethnic American Treasures Garden tour will showcase the GEO Salsa and Vermiculture businesses.
University of California Davis is known for its particular strength in agricultural and environmental sciences. In 2012, Sierra Magazine named UC Davis the nation’s # 1 “Cool School” for its sustainability and climate change programs and considered one of our nations Greenest and Healthiest colleges”.
Our visit to the Center for Land-Based Learning will showcase hands-on programs that are teaching students about the importance of agriculture and watershed conservation while showcasing agricultural, environmental and food system careers.
